“Really, Guys?”

by Bill Rudge

I walked into a shop where several men in their sixties, seventies, and eighties were discussing politics and other topics. They were trash-talking just about everyone and everything – using God’s name in vain frequently. I made a comment but their “hardened hearts” and “attitudes carved in stone” made coherent conversation difficult.

Each trying to top the other, their crude and vulgar comments resonated in the room and I thought, “So this is the summation of your lives? God created you and enabled you to live on His planet so as to develop a relationship with Him and reflect His values. But after all your years this is what you have attained.”

How could men, who at this point in their lives should be wiser and more mature, be reduced to such futility and senselessness? They may have thought they were impressing each other. But how pitiful and wasteful to spend the waning years of one’s life in foolish and profane conversation and behavior. Hopefully, they will learn the wisdom of David before it is too late:

As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him… (Psalm 103:15-17).
